The goal of this project was to remodel the current senior care center to reflect a shift in the philosophy of care for dementia patients. New studies show that a homelike environment is preferred over the institutional environment typically found in senior living facilities. This project was featured in Healthcare Design’s annual showcase (September 2015).

The first step was to convert all of the existing double rooms into single, private rooms. The entire unit was designed with the ease and comfort of dementia patients in mind. Bright colors were strategically placed to promote a friendly environment and help residents identify their rooms. One special feature is a circular walking path pattern designed into the hallway flooring, which enables residents to “wander” and never come upon a dead end. Along the walking path are large vinyl graphics of Great Falls in the 1940s and 1950s, adding a nostalgic element enjoyed by the residents.
