Challenge
Serving largely as the front door in how patients and their families experience the hospital, the newly designed Benefis Emergency Department is THE state-of-the-art emergency center in Great Falls, Montana.
The design features an initial Rapid Medical Exam (RME) pod of nine exam rooms that treats and releases 20-25% of Benefis’ 35,000 patients per year. If patient acuity warrants, patients bypass the RME pod and enter the critical care pod that accesses three trauma rooms, two multi-purpose procedure rooms, a behavioral health psych suite with two rooms and five additional exam rooms. A third overflow pod provides 11 additional rooms during surge conditions and a dedicated sexual assault nurse examination suite. This third pod is also part of the hospital’s Critical Decision Unit (CDU).
The project required phased, occupied construction to maintain a minimum of 18 fully functional emergency treatment rooms 24/7.
With a total of 33 patient treatment rooms, this renovation and remodel nearly doubled Benefis’ current emergency department and will reduce the ‘door-to-doc’ time and significantly improve overall patient satisfaction.
