Challenge

With the purchase of a state-of-the-art chemistry analysis automation system and plans for relocating their Histology Lab within the renovated lab suite, Benefis Health System commissioned our firm to design this 12,400 square foot hospital laboratory facility.

The renovated laboratory included the design of Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Molecular, Cytology, Pathology and Phlebotomy Lab spaces within the suite. With patient wayfinding always at the forefront, the project features a new identifiable storefront along one of the hospital’s major hallways. We worked with the client and the construction team to phase the renovation to ensure the laboratory remained fully operational 24/7. Occupied construction can be challenging for the medical staff, design team, and contractor, but it is essential to hospital projects.

Major challenges on this project included low ceiling heights, working around and within the existing structure, and maintaining/enhancing existing fire-rated construction.
