Challenge

The Squadron Operations Facility (Montana Air National Guard) was designed to make the F-15 flight crew’s travel routine internally efficient as possible. The three main areas of the facility consisted of Operations, Intelligence/Vault and Life Support. These programs were put in close proximity of each other to provide the needed travel routine of the crew and adhere to the restricted security guidelines.

The Ops Desk was the central point in the building designed with a 180- degree view of the flight line and anchored the remaining program about its location. To meet the client’s requirements, the design included implementing sustainable strategies such as natural lighting and locating the offices of higher ranked officers in view of the flight line.

To tie the aesthetic to the existing MANG complex, the Squadron Operations Facility’s façade was built using of earth-toned masonry and maintenance-free colors. The overall design reflected the importance of this new facility and its internal mission on the base.
