Challenge
The elevator addition to Whittier Elementary School adds essential ADA access to the school’s second floor. The addition minimizes the contrast between new construction and the existing historic school, while also enhancing performance and aesthetics through modern materiality. The addition acknowledges several elements that carry across the historic facade and also draws from the existing building’s color palette.
