Challenge
The Big Iron Truck Wash facility required Nelson Architects to coordinate closely with multiple engineering and design disciplines to create a functional, durable, and visually cohesive commercial truck wash facility. The project integrated both automated and manual truck washing systems, along with the extensive equipment, water storage, and mechanical infrastructure necessary to support the large-scale washing operations.
In addition to the wash bays, the owner envisioned a customer-focused experience that included a comfortable waiting lounge and retail area where drivers could relax while watching their trucks progress through the automated wash system. These spaces were designed to enhance the overall customer experience while supporting the facility’s operational needs.
A key project objective was maximizing the building’s visibility from the interstate to attract passing truck traffic. To accomplish this, Nelson Architects and the design team incorporated a prominent tower that serves both functional and architectural purposes. The tower houses the facility’s HVAC equipment while also providing a highly visible location for large-scale signage. This dual-purpose design element creates a distinctive landmark that can be seen from a considerable distance, giving approaching drivers ample notice to safely exit the interstate and access the facility.
The result is a highly efficient commercial truck wash facility that successfully balances operational performance, customer comfort, and a strong architectural presence, reinforcing the owner’s business goals while creating an easily recognizable destination for the trucking community.
